Adopt
Adoption is a responsible step, and you need to be sure you're ready for this challenge. If, after careful consideration, you decide to adopt a dog, you can do so through the Seslavtsi and Bogrov shelters, where many dogs are waiting for their chance.

Are you ready for a dog?
We're thrilled you've decided to get a dog. There are a few things we'd like you to consider before you finalize the adoption.
Responsibility
A dog is a serious commitment and requires you to dedicate time for regular walks. Even if you have a yard, it cannot replace walks, which enrich a dog's life through new smells, exercise, and socialization with other dogs. Think carefully about your daily routine. If you work all day, an energetic young dog might not be the right choice for the first few years. For nature lovers, an active dog is most suitable. If you prefer to be at home, an older dog would be the right choice, as they will also appreciate time spent indoors.

Funds
Being a dog owner obligates you to cover all its expenses (if this is difficult for you, perhaps you'd like to become our foster home). This includes not only quality food and accessories (toys, bed, collar/harness, etc.), but also the possibility of health problems arising, which require veterinary care that is not cheap. Additionally, there are annual check-ups, tests, vaccinations, deworming, and more.
Family
Before choosing a dog, discuss it with all family members. Talk about who will be involved in the dog's care and walks. If children will be involved, it's important to adopt a calmer, not fearful, dog by nature. Are there family members with allergies to animal fur? If you don't know, it's a good idea to check this and consult your doctor before getting a dog.

What if unexpected situations arise?
Every dog is different. Previous experience with dogs doesn't guarantee that a new dog won't surprise you with behavior you don't understand or know the origin of. It's important to seek help from expert trainers who use modern methods for dog training. We no longer "train" our dogs in the old sense; instead, we seek real solutions to build a good relationship with our new friend.
Adoption Procedure
Discover your new friend
Choosing a dog from hundreds of others is no easy task. Often, we adopt the dog that looks saddest or appeals most to us aesthetically. Unfortunately, such an approach often leads to unsuccessful adoptions — the dog is returned to the shelter or ends up in an environment that doesn't meet its needs. Therefore, one of our main goals is to encourage sustainable and responsible adoptions. With the help of a certified trainer, we have created detailed profiles of dogs from the Bogrov and Seslavtsi shelters. These profiles present each dog's individual qualities, needs, and behavior to facilitate choice and increase the chances of a successful coexistence. You can view these profiles here.
Get to know your new friend
Before adopting a dog, we invite you to fill out our adoption application. Afterwards, we will contact you to discuss and help you find the most suitable dog.
You can preview the profiles of the dogs we've published here. Together, we will discuss which one would best fit your lifestyle. Our goal is to make an informed and sustainable choice – both for you and for the dog.
Meeting and Conversation
We are the people who know the dogs in both shelters best. We spend time with them – socializing them, building trust, and preparing them for life as pets. That's why we'd like to meet you. During our meeting, you'll have the opportunity to ask any questions you have. We will also learn about you to ensure the dog goes to a safe and responsible home.
You can prepare in advance for your new friend's adaptation period. We've compiled helpful tips and guidelines, which you can find here.
We assess if the applicant is suitable
We advocate for humane treatment of animals, and a crucial part of this is how our pets are raised. Dogs are not commodities, nor are they living alarm systems. We believe they have been through enough and deserve the best. If, during our conversations, we determine that what you can offer the dog does not meet modern and humane pet care standards, we reserve the right to decline your application.
Adoption Declaration and Maintaining Contact
The adoption process concludes with the signing of an adoption agreement, which details the requirements for a safe and healthy life for the dog, consent for regular photo updates, and agreement for home visits.
During the initial period, we will be there for you and the dog to help ensure the first few weeks go smoothly and without problems.
We are always available for questions and will be happy to direct you to suitable trainers if difficulties arise. It's important to note that few trainers have experience with shelter dogs and their specific needs.

Can't adopt a dog? Try virtual adoption…
Adopting a dog, and dog ownership in general, is a responsible decision that requires preparation and careful consideration. If you don't feel ready for this important step yet, you can help us by virtually adopting one of our 'bandits'. This will help us cover the costs of foster home placement, additional medical care, preparation for adoption, and more.
Meet the bandits
There are over 1800 dogs in Sofia's municipal shelters. We are convinced that among them is exactly the dog you've always dreamed of. Here you can meet some of them: wonderful dogs of different ages, with various personalities and needs. They all face one common challenge – to transform from an unwanted 'bandit' into a beloved pet.
Adopt,
don't shop!
By adopting a dog instead of buying one from a pet shop or an online ad, you break a cycle of cruel business. And not only that. You become part of an active civil society that understands that stopping illegal and backyard breeding is a significant part of the overall solution to the stray animal problem in Bulgaria.
